Faculty Award Lecture Series on connecting to nature through literature
Northwest Nazarene University is pleased to announce the 2017-18 Faculty Award Lecture Series featuring Dr. Darrin Grinder, chair of the Department of Language, Literature and Cultural Studies. The lecture will be held in the Brandt Center Grand Lobby on Thursday, November 2 at 7 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.
Dr. Grinder’s lecture “Man Is Not the Measure: Spiritual Reading of Literature and Loving Nature” explores the role literature, particularly fiction, plays in spiritual transformation and connecting us to creation in a way utilitarian knowledge cannot.
Grinder explains, “We need to allow ourselves to be challenged by literature to feel compassion and sorrow and love for creation, especially since we come from a tradition that has been so influenced by dualism that we reject our kinship with the world.”
Dr. John Cossel, chair of the Department of Biology, will respond.
