“The M.R.S. Degree — A Musical. Kinda.” premieres at NNU

October 26, 2016

There’s an old joke around college campuses that some people only go to school to find a spouse. The “M.R.S. degree” they call it, and it’s “offered” on just about every campus in America. Now that joke is coming to life as an original musical. “The M.R.S. Degree — A Musical. Kinda.” premieres at NNU November 10–14, in conjunction with Homecoming & Family Weekend 2016.

Written by Dr. Arnold Ytreeide, director of NNU’s film school, the musical is set in the 1930s at the tiny “College of Somewhere.” A new set of freshmen arrive on campus excited to discover new life and new love, only to find the school has strict rules against most anything that sounds like fun.

“It’s a comedy about college life, from the perspective of college students,” said Chandler Gray, a junior who plays the role of Sidney. “But it’s also got the kinds of serious moments students struggle with. Literally what we’re showing the audience is how we see college from inside our heads.”

According to Ytreeide, who is also the author of the popular Jotham’s Journey Christmas books, he wrote the musical on the premise that the old joke isn’t such a joke. “I met my own wife in college, as did most of our friends,” he said, “so I wrote M.R.S. Degree to reflect the many ways we fall in and out of love on campus.” Why is it “kinda” a musical? Ytreeide laughed and said, “I guess you’ll have to figure that out after you see it.”

Performances will be in the NNU Little Theatre located at 550 Holly St., Nampa.
