Graphic design student inspired by location

June 22, 2016

“I feel as if I have never worked a day in my life because my job is my passion,” senior graphic design major Alex Kildow replied when asked why she pursued art. “I love how I can take my artistic skills and use my creativity to design a logo, magazine, poster or website for a client. It’s an incredible feeling to see someone love your work as much as you do.”

Having towed around a sketchbook and colored pencils for as long as she can remember, Alex possessed a passion for art at a young age. Coinciding with this love of art, the outdoors also captures her interest and is expressed through her work. “My design work is greatly influenced by the places I visit and travel,” explained Alex. “As of right now, I am working on another Idaho-inspired project.”

“Idahoans take great pride in our state, and I wanted to captivate our pride through my Sawtooth Snapback Design.”
Alex’s first Idaho-inspired project featured the Sawtooth Mountain Range. During the NNU Department of Art and Design’s student retreat in Stanley, Idaho, Alex encountered the Sawtooths for the first time. “I have always liked exploring Idaho’s forests and mountains,” reminisced Alex. “But during the hike towards the Sawtooths, I fell completely in love with Idaho’s backyard.”

Returning from the retreat, Alex used her experience in Stanley as inspiration for a new project—the Sawtooth Snapback Design. Wanting her design to appeal to adventurous outdoorsmen and, more specifically, to outdoorsy Idahoans, Alex incorporated Idaho’s rugged landscape into the design. She explained, “Idahoans take great pride in our state, and I wanted to captivate our pride through my Sawtooth Snapback Design.”

So far Alex has sold over fifty hats and the count is still rising. “I am very thrilled by how many people have ordered a Sawtooth Snapback,” she remarked. “I have hand delivered and shipped my hats to New York, Ohio, California and Texas. Recently, I even had my hat worn and shown on live video broadcast by radio host Keke Luv for 103.3 Kiss FM!”

This summer, Alex is working on a couple more apparel projects that will be released this fall (keep an eye on her Instagram account @alexkildow) and working with an upcoming Indie Band from Portland christened The Fearless Youth.

After graduating next spring, Alex plans to stay in the Pacific Northwest area and work as a designer in a small business, non-profit organization or design firm. She is confident that her education at NNU has prepared her for the next step. “NNU’s art department has an incredible graphic design program,” said Alex. “My professors have never stopped pushing me to become a stronger designer. I know that upon graduating I will be a well-rounded artist from web design, photography, painting, and other art classes.”
